"Inspired" Movies

No wonder how good a movie is, if it is "inspired" by some other movie and the director refuses to acknowledges it, I just don't like the movie. This happens even if a few scenes are copied. I know that I should consider that it is a good way to bring quality foreign movies to Indian etc etc., but I guess "plagiarism is bad" is engraved so deeply that I cannot help it (Pity that Kaavya Viswanathan does not read my blog).

The last three Bollywood movies that I watched were all inspired by some foreign movies.

1. Bluffmaster

2. Taxi No 9211

3. Malamaal Weekly

Question : What do you consider plagiarism ? Would any remake be termed that ? If that's true, did you enjoy Ocean's 11 ?

from my original post: "if it is "inspired" by some other movie and the director refuses to acknowledges it"

I am ok with remakes as long as there is some sort of acknowledgement and movie going public is not fooled as watching some "original and different" work. Some of reviews of the movies that I talked about, praised the director for a "new idea" kind of things.

If you want to make an inspired movie, do what RamGopalVarma did. Put up a statement at the start that they are inspired by someone's work.

Ocean's 11 was a remake with the same name etc. So is King Kong and so is Poseidon(adventure). There is no effort to brush away the fact that they are inspired. I am perfectly ok with that.

I am NOT ok with things like trashing DHKMN for being a copy of ChoriChori when ChoriChori itself was a copy (frame to frame at times) of ItHappenedOneNight. I liked HumHainRaahiPyaarKe and then I saw "Houseboat". I get frustrated thinking about the lack of originality of Indian filmmakers. That is why I paid extra to watch Hanuman(animation) as I thought it was a great original effort.

About Malamaal Weekly, I hope nobody pays to watch that movie.

Chill Winston! Didn't read your post properly. I agree, it's not a good thing - I remember Anand had posted something similar. But sometimes I think, it's better than the stinkers that are otherwise made - like Home Delivery. Imitation is the best form of flattery ... have that motto and enjoy that entertainment.

I am chilled out, just have some free time today :) (but I still hope that nobody pays to watch these copycats). There are far too many original movies that I like to watch and enjoy, more than what I have time for. Not that I did not enjoy certain parts of these movies but they still need to be exposed and they would score low in my books for being shameless copies.

Again, I believe imitation is only best form of flattery if the imitator makes it evident that it is an imitation. Otherwise it is just like copying someone's research without his permission and making money using it :).
